Cape Hatteras
By John Delonas
I am old, a broken ship on the beach,
And children play round my spars;
Abandoned by a true love that meant ruin to me;
A love that sent my proud mast reeling
Towards the stars,
That sent me invincible to win the right to thee.
I would not of faithlessness nor deceit moan,
But remember Moses who at God's command
Struck not once but thrice the appointed stone;
For doubting-- he never saw the promised land.
I never held you to any vow,
But you trusted me completely,
More than intelligence would allow;
You were free, but I a slave to your fidelity.
